Why Programmers Need Coaches

In today's business environment, programmers need skills that their predecessors never dreamed of. They need technical skills to develop a quality product to exacting standards on a tight timetable, but they also need the social and organizational skills to work closely with their colleagues, with customers, and with the programmers of other companies. Schoolwork, even advanced degrees, doesn't begin to prepare them for the complex environment they will face in industry.

Adapting to New Roles

So it's not surprising that you might have a difficult time adjusting to new situations. Perhaps you have trouble fitting into a new team or working with a new manager. You might become frustrated because your contributions and skills aren't valued. Or you may have trouble balancing the demands of your job and your life outside of work. If you're under this kind of pressure I'm sure that your life is miserable - you might even be questioning whether to stay in the software business or leave for less stressful work.

How I Can Help

I can help you in this situation in three ways. First, I can provide sympathetic, supportive coaching to help you sort out all the complicated, interconnected issues, and decide what you really want. Second, I can help you make a realistic plan for getting to that goal. And finally, I can stick with you while you implement your plan, pushing you ahead when it's needful, or encouraging your when things aren't going well, or helping you replan when situations change, or celebrating with you when you make real progress. You'll be doing the hard work, but I'll be your partner all the way.

I'm the right person to help you with the new challenges that you face because I've already faced many of them in my own days as a programmer. I know how frustrating it is to work with a boss who's not nearly so talented as you, but thinks that he has all the answers. I understand why you sometimes feel that your job is at a dead end and that you can't possibly advance. But I also know that all of these problems have solutions, and that you just need a little encouragement and focus to break through them.
