Lonely at the Top, isn't it?

For high level managers, there are few people to confide in. It's a cliché, but life really is lonely at the top, and the isolation can be very stressful. If you're a senior manager or executive, I can act as your confidant, and you can discuss your frustrations without causing strains in the organization. It's unusual for senior managers to get truly honest feedback about ideas, because their staffs automatically defer to the manager's judgment. But I'm outside the management structure, and I'm free to give you honest, straightforward feedback.

Executive coaching is now a well established business practice in most corporations. It is very common for senior managers to retain a coach to support them in their job, and there is substantial evidence that this relationship increases a manager's effectiveness. Executive coaches can help in lots of ways:

Making difficult decisions

Suppose that your division is being downsized, and you need to lay off several of your workers. How will you decide how to distribute the layoffs, and how can you personally deal with the stress of telling workers that they no longer have a place in the company? A coach can help you separate the emotional and business segments of the decision so that you can make the best possible decision, while helping you cope with the emotional component, so that you can sleep more easily at night.

Mastering unfamiliar roles

Pretend that you're the founder of a startup company, and your product is almost ready to go to market. You are a brilliant engineer, but you've never had to deal with marketing, or sales, or with venture capital investors. How do you face a completely new area without panicking? I can help you break down what seems to be an impossible task into a series of smaller steps, each of which you can manage. Then, I can help you through the process by pushing you over the hurdles, celebrating your successes, and encouraging you through the setbacks.

Surviving a harsh culture

Often, the corporate culture of senior management is very different from the culture you were used to before the promotion. There can be savage competition for resources, turf wars can sap your energy, and personal vendettas can make your life miserable. In a harsh culture, I can help you survive with a minimum of stress by helping you separate the emotional from the strategic components, and helping you plan and execute a strategy to survive and prevail.

How I Can Help

Since I'm not on your staff or in your chain of command, I can provide a confidential, honest place to try out your ideas, or talk about your own misgivings about the organization. I can suggest a lot of ways to make things better but, even better, I can help you think through the difficult issues you face.

Check Me Out

Even if you're doing well in your job, it couldn't hurt to contact me to talk about how things could be improved. Even in one free call, I can probably help you find ways to improve your situation, or at least to understand the craziness going on around you.
