Changing Jobs

The old days of picking a company and staying with it for your whole career are gone, never to return. These days you need to be managing your own career, and sometimes that means changing jobs. But switching companies is a pretty big move, so you need to think it through carefully. Here are some of the things I can help you with.

What Kind of Job do I Want?

It's no good just saying, "I want something new." You really should have some plan for your next job: it should teach you some new technology, or show you some other part of the industry, or put you in position for a major promotion. I can help you decide what you want out of your next job, and what kind of jobs are likely to be successful for you.

Do I Need to Leave This Company?

Sometimes "changing jobs" can mean just that - finding another job in your same company that suits you better and gives you room to grow. If you can manage it, there are a lot of advantages to sticking with your current company, but it's not so easy as it seems, because the good jobs may never be listed on the internal job board. I can help you with the strategy of networking and searching for jobs, without compromising your current job.

What Kind of Company Do I Want?

Are you a startup sort of person, comfortable with risk or uncertainty; or do you prefer the security of a larger company? Do you want to do real research, or are you more into product development? Do you want a real high-energy company or would you prefer one that has a slower pace? There are hundreds of important questions to ask if you're going to shop for a new company, and I can help you think through their answers.

The Job Search

You probably know by now that the best jobs aren't found on Monster.com or HotJobs.com - they come from a friend of a friend who heard about this really great job. In other words, networking is your best friend for job searching. I can help you work your existing contacts and form a larger network in an orderly, logical way.

Landing the Job

When you've found the perfect job, you still need to get their attention, get interviewed, and get hired. I can help you write the perfect resume for the job, find internal pathways for your resume to get to the hiring manager, and coach you to give the best interview of your life.

Check Me Out

Even if you're doing well in your job, it couldn't hurt to contact me to talk about how things could be improved. Even in one free call, I can probably help you find ways to improve your situation, or at least to understand the craziness going on around you.
